Hi

I believe I need to get a 2 way motorised valve on my CH system replaced as it is leaking.

I'm not that confident to do this, considering I will need to cut through the pipe etc to get the old one out. How much would a 'reasonable' quote from a plumber be for this (I'm getting a plumber to quote for this, but just wanted to get an idea so I don't get ripped off!!)?

Cheers in advance.

Sorry - forget to add to the original post that I think I'll need a new PRV in the system (pressure is dropping over time and overflow pipe outside from the boiler is dripping constantly).

The boiler is a potterton profile - I spoke to the plumber who said he doesn't think there is a PRV in that boiler so it will be somewhere else in the system.

Therefore the quote I've got for finding and replacing the PRV and also replacing the motorised valve is £270 (VAT, parts and labour included).

Does that sound about right??

Rip off,ure looking at 75 quid max for parts,so hes charging 200 quid labour for a job that even if its awkward shouldnt take any longer than 2-3 hours max

No price is ever a rip off, the work is only worth what your willing to pay for it.
So the parts will be £75 plus Vat and the labour (Should it take it 3 Hours) will be £65p/h where is the rip off?

The Gas Board used to allow 186 minutes for that job. :D

Blocked cold feeds can hinder it.

£270 is a bit steep, Id quote at £240. Thats a honeywell if you already have a spring return valve. More if I have to re-wire if you have motor open, motor close. Inhibitor costs money too, or are you pro's not going to bother with that?

Why do so-called experts undervalue our proffession?

Yes, in fact its cheap if he's doing the job properly. (Honeywell and re-dosing the inhibitor). Get him / her to check the charge in the Ex Vessel. Should be 0.9 bar.

He calls him a combi "specialist" and not a combi "expert" !

Perhaps he knows nothing about combis but they are all he does so he can genuinely say that he is a specialist in combis.

The OP mentioned cutting pipes so there is clearly some complications that he has not mentioned. Nor did he say which bopiler so we dont know whats involved in this PRV. That should ne easy to trace back from the leaking vent pipe though!

My estimation system produced a price of £242 to replace the motor valve and a PRV but did not include the undisclosed difficulties!

Blocked cold feed???its a pressurised system!other than the 2port being behind the cylinder theres no reason why it cant b done in 2hrs and drink a cup of tea afterwards.65 pound an hour!!?? British gas charge 70 quid an hour!

Ah, so you have been to look at the job then, how the F***k do you know, could be a 40mins drive there, 40 mins back, 3rd floor flat with parking 5 mins walk away with tools, rust inhibitor no drain point cause some t***t did it cheap so there aint one ect ect ect, any pillock can work for nothing.

If BG can charge £75.00 per hour then so can anyone else without being accused of ripping off, if it was ripping off Tradeing standards would be onto BG, if they dont then it's not ripping off, if it is scrap trading standards as they are getting paid for nothing which is a rip off.

Lol,i didnt mean to annoy anybody and to be fair 'rip off' was the wrong word to use, maybe overpriced would have been better.as for 'wot boiler it is for the prv' he clearly states its a profile so its gonna have an external exp vessel and prv.my comment was based on the fact it is a pressurised system and charging 200 for 2hrs work seemed overpriced to me.obviously if the motor valve is behind cylinder then thats different.

I was generalising the job.

What about re-wiring? Can you re-wire a spring close to a motor close? So... you'd change like for like.

What exactly are you a specialist in? If its Combi's, then your out of you league with system faults.

I guess youve assumed the 2 port isnt behind the cylinder (or even behind a boiler). Idiot.

What about the inhibitor? Ignore that I guess.

Why is it 2 hrs work? You seen it?

What about possible rewiring and inhibitor? ASSUME makes an ASS out of U and ME?

Take a step back and learn the basics eh.

David.

here briefly u need to vent ure anger elsewhere mate,i think the VERBAL quote is overpriced based on he hasnt assesed job.and "the trace and repair prv" is comical.

I agree.
And those to whom it applies, I wish you were made to commit to sh**ging someone as easily as you price what you haven't seen, only to be presented with some 18 stone bearded ladyboy with a dose.
