The law allows private events to more or less to set their own rules.

That's true, and it is always going to be difficult at times to reconcile the wishes of private groups, and wider civil rights.

But my comment wasn't about a group setting rules for participation in an event of theirs:

did anybody ask the women if they wanted to take part? i assume they don't because they are muslim too and they also follow the same religion. you wouldn't expect a christian to do a run on a sunday, or a jew to do one during shabbat.

I would expect them to be allowed to if they wanted.

If a Christian or a Jew was barred from running on the Sabbath, it could not possibly be in an event organised by that religious group. No Christian group would organise a run on a Sunday if they took the position that Christians should not run on a Sunday.

The context could only be a secular event, e.g. a park fun-run, and a religious group seeking to ban adherents from partaking.

So yes, in that context, I would "expect a christian to do a run on a sunday, or a jew to do one during shabbat" if they wanted to.

There would be no legitimate excuse to stop women running in the same park, at the same time, on the same course, if they wanted to.
They just wouldn't be eligible for any awards, prizes, etc associated with the event, because it was a closed invitation event.

Maybe he struggled to understand their explanation because it was biologically nonsensical, scientifically illiterate, and with no basis in science or medicine.
