The only rad in the house without a TRV is in the lounge. Is this the usual choice? (Baxi solo boiler, 3-bed det house.) Thermosts is also in the lounge.

Ok if your thermostat is in the lounge.
Normally bathroom one does not have one if there is no bypass fitted.

if you have a gas fire in this room the room stat is useless idealy and going from part l which any competant installer should know the room stat should be in the hallway with a rad with two lock sheild valves on as a by pass. the lounge is one of the worst places to put a room stat....
Stat SHOULD be in the hallway but this is not always the case in my limited experience.
If the rest of the house is warm enough then no need to relocate but you may find that stat cuts the boiler when living room has reached set temp leaving other rooms a bit cold.

that is my point fitting a room stat in the living room is useless and if it is fitted in the living room it is up to you to advise the tenant of the house to move it thats what you get paid for.... and how can the rest of the house get warm enough ................mmmmmmmmmmmmm

No gas fire. Seems to me that the boiler is only just up to the job - it's ok without the hot water on but the lounge rad takes an age to get hot when it's on. I think it's working fine but is a bit weedy for this application. Would the lounge rad be the last one in the system and thus be last to heat up?

If you mean the lounge heats up slower than the other rooms, have a look at radiator Balancing. (though this need not be wrong, you don't want it being the first room to warm up, or the thermostat wlil turn the pump off and leave the other rooms cold)
