Remove the valve head (no water will escape) and you will see a metal pin sticking out of the metal body. This pin should go down easily when pressed and pop back up again when released. If it is stiff, use a little WD40 or similar to lubricate the pin.
Tapping very lightly on the side of the valve (the actual body) with something such as a spanner also helps when using WD40.
The heat output of the radiator will remain constant until the room temperature approaches the temperature set on the TRV.
TRVs control the room temperature, not the radiator temperature. TRVs just turn the radiator down or off when the room reaches the selected temperature.
The radiator temperature is controlled by the setting of the lockshield valve, but bear in mind opening or closing the lockshield will affect the balancing of the whole system.
Some erroneously believe that balancing a system is unnecessary if TRVs are fitted. If a system isn't balanced, some radiators may remain cold until the TRVs on other radiators close, diverting heat to the cold rads.
