This is probably a stupid question but can a radiator be installed on it's end as long as the bleed valve is at the top?.
 
No. You'd get much less heat from it. Look at the back of it - see the tunnels where the fins are welded to the rad? These draw air in at the bottom, heat it and throw it out at the top. Radiators actually radiate very little of their heat! Most of it is convected!

And the brackets rely on gravity forcing the rad down onto them. :wink:
 
Thanks for the reply mate. Excuse the ignorance. Plumbing is (obviously lol) not my thing.
