as per usual, I have the most random question...
When we removed the awful carpet in our 1930s house I have noticed a nice "square mark" on the wooden flooring...as if someone painted around a rug.
I have just spotted it as well on "under the hammer". Please enlighten me :)

it's very common. For most houses, fitted carpets only arrived in the 1960's or 1970's. Prior to that people might have had a carpet square in a standard size, and painted the floor around it. They would rotate the carpet occasionally to even wear.

You will find your stairs were also painted round a central runner.

Was it painted or stained? In the old days, householders frequently stained the deal floorboards to make them look like dark oak or similar.

Many were grained to look like Oak or other hardwoods and varnished over. The Carpet may have been handed through the family.
