No there's no rule of thumb, its a compromise between required light in the rooms and external appearances.

Try the velux site for some ideas.
Only you know what you intend to use the loft space for and how much natural light you want. If its only for storage then the smallest velux will give enough light to see around, if its for a work space then you could go for more/several velux all depends on how it has to conform.
