Good afternoon ladies and gents

Firstly, I'm a total noob to this forum, so go easy on me! :)

I've read quite a few posts about this already but couldnt quite find the exact problem we're having with this particular boiler, if it has been posted elsewhere i apologise for duplicating threads.

I have read that these Ravenheat boilers are not very well regarded by those in the know, i however don't know much about boilers at all. If it gives me hot water for a shower then i'm happy - today however, it stopped giving me hot water, so i'm not happy & i need to get it fixed or the kids will go to school with dirt on their faces

the problem started a few days ago with the the pilot light going out and not firing up when hot water was demanded (i cant comment on the heating side of things as its rather warm in tropical manchester at the moment so havent had much cause to use it). Anyway, "thats not a problem" i thought; just press the gas button on the front and the pilot light caught and we were ok.

today however, my good lady callled when i was at work to inform me it just wasnt happening. The pilot light ignites when the button is pressed in, but doesnt stay on when it is released.

I've tried turning the hot water tap on before & during pressing the button in, but to no avail. The fan does start when water is running but still no pilot light.

I tried by putting the heating on; again the fan starts up but still no pilot light.

does anyone know of the possible cause for this fault?

I'm no corgi registered plumber, but i am pretty useful with my hands; so if its not involving the gas supply, i'm pretty confident i could follow instructions to mend it

any help would be greatly appreciated

These boilers have a high limit stat which interrupts the thermocouple. It may be the fault or it could just be a failed t/couple.Whatever it is,means a venture into the combustion chamber and should be left to a pro.Not a bad boiler as some would make out.

mmmm.....seeing as i didnt understand much of what you put in that reply, i'm guessing we need an expert - it seems like we'll have to call the British Gas people out

grrrrrrr.....£169 down the drain

thanks for your reply

I'm not keen on the "down the drain" bit. It's £169 for heating and hot water again! If you get an indipendant RGI out it'll probably be cheaper.

obviously not "down the drain"

i do value my hot water, its just money that would be better spent elsewhere

there's a bloke on our road who works for British Gas, so i might knock on and see if he'll do a forreigner

Round my way BG are more ££ than that.
Be a bit careful, quite a small % of BG guys can actually mend boilers. Of those that do, some are great, some are awful.
Try your loacal bloke, but as it's quite likely to be a small part, go Independent if he can't help.

I would not recommend asking a BG man to work on the side. First he is not registered and second if he makes a mess you have no comeback.

Think your figures are the wrong way round mate; quite a high %age will fix it. You'll find that the same where ever you go, having done non BG training and BG too, I know full well who are trained better
