I have a problem with my boiler . Its a Ravenheat RSF 820/20t

The boiler itself seems to work as it should ie hot water and radiators work OK, but after you turn off the hot water tap the boiler makes a rumbling noise .
i've also noticed that i've had to top the system about every 3 - 4 weeks.

Had a plumber come round and he suggested one of three things - faulty fan (has been changed but problem still exists), faulty gas valve or faulty water pump

any help would be appreciated before I splash out any more cash

Its better to call a boiler engineer and let him change any parts and take full responsibility for any misdiagnosis !

I have this imagination that you called this plumber and as you did not seem inclined to pay him then he just suggested three things which could be wrong and then you just changed one part only to find that was not the problem.

your imagination is clearly getting the better of you. I called him out as part of a boiler service and paid for his services. By the way (excuse my ignorance) but he was a boiler specialist (sorry - engineer)

In that case you should not have paid for a wrong diagnosis !

Its very easy to correctly diagnose a noisy fan with a mechanical stethoscope!

Ask for your money back if you paid for a replacement fan.

Does it make this noise when the heating is on and the hot tap is turned off or only when the hot tap has been running?

Are "mechanical stethoscopes" different to the ones used by medics? Where are they available and are they easy to use?

Medical ones have a diaphragm which is placed in contact with the body.

Mechanical ones have a rod probe which acts on a diaphragm which converts the movement of the diaphragm to air which goes through a tube to the ear.

You can use a screwdriver but the correct thing is much better if you can carry it safely. You can also get the tip to places a screwdriver cannot reach.

Available from some tool places, cheaper ones about £5 I expect.
