my main switch/rcd keeps intermittently tripping, its a pain for frozen food!
how do i determine what is wrong? could it simply be time to replace the rcd?

you need to unplug everything, then plug it back in one at a time if it trips strait away you have just found the ofending item.

Have you had ANY work done? check their.

sometimes as fidges / freezers get old they have been known to trip rcds (i am not saying it is but it has been known)

if you do not find it strait away it may be a case of leave things off for a couple of days, to iliminate them.

does it always happen at the same time or just at random,

have you a pond / water feature ?

If all else fails you will have to get an electrician in to "megger" everything but try the previous first.

It is also unlikely your main RCD is faulty

also do not forget to check any lights that you have that are plugged in

Dont know the answer to this and I dont pretend to know much about this sort of stuff but I had this problem and it turned out to be some debris in the CU. I had been doing some building work and dust, grit etc had found its way into the CU and was tripping it out.

RCD as a main switch is always a sod for nuisance tripping........seriously......get a spark in to see if it is possible to alter your earthing system to a type that doesnt require the use of an RCD as the main switch.

He could also use his meggar to find the likely cause of the nuisance tripping. Usually with intermitant faults like yours it is due to a neutral to earth fault ANYWHERE in the installation, and fluctuating load currents.

Of course, every so often it is due to a faulty RCD.
