Hello all,

I would like to add electric power to my garden shed. I am reliably informed that to do that I need to fit an RCD. Question is: do I buy a new consumer unit with RCD incorporated or just buy an RCD box to attach to my consumer unit?

Any help and comments would be appreciated.

Kind Regards
Geoff

hi geoff, you could do it that way and put a two way consumer unit in the shed but remember mate there are a lot of variables with regards to electrical installations so be careful, pay particular attention to the cable and how you're running it to the shed, if in doubt contact a sparki.

best of luck

every install is different. if your house has no RCD, it is easiest to buy a 2-way CU for the shed and have an RCD as the incomer. The cable to the shed needs no RCD protection.

Other factors to consider:

1) The length of the cable and the load it has to supply. http://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Book/4.3.1.htm

2) The type of supply that you have, and whether you should export the earth to the shed. http://www.iee.org/Publish/WireRegs...matters_electrical_installations_outdoors.pdf

3) What route the cable will take to get to the shed. http://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Book/7.13.1.htm

4) How you will isolate the incoming supply and protect the cable to the shed if you cannot supply it from the house CU.

5) How you will test the cable and the shed installation to ensure that it is safe.

6) If, and how, you intend to comply with Part P of the Building Regulations.

Hi all

Thanks for the reply everyone, very informative and very helpful. I now see what needs to be done, I will also consult a sparkie as well just be on the safe side if I get stuck.

Once again thanks to all.

Geoff
