Would an RCD trip faster if it was located at say the shed socket rather than at the consumer unit or would the difference in time to trip be in milliseconds and not worth worrying about.

The cable should have an RCD at both ends in order to ensure adequate protection.

The best way of doing this will be to put a suitable rated 100mA RCD in the consumer unit in the house, then in the shed, I presume your having a few sockets and a light, put a small 2 way enclosure. The lights can come off a 3A Type B MCB whiclst the poer can be controlled by a suitable 30mA RCBO.

If you are only putting one or two sockets in the shed as a radial circuit, then do not exceed 20A for the RCBO rating, prefereably only 16A.
