Absolute beginner to this so advice needed please.

I have 3 slabs on the driveway that are now rocky, I want to re-lay them and have read to lay them on a dry mix.
After taking out the old mortar (if any), what depth do I need of a dry mix and what mix would you suggest?
Do I need the mix so the slab just lays on top to be level with the others or does it need to be slightly higher so as to tap down with a rubber hammer?
They will be surrounded by other slabs when I relay them.

Thanks

It is difficult to neatly lay slabs on a dry base, because they either are correct or are wrong, there is no scope for any adjustment.
The best way to do it is to lay the slabs on a bed of proper mortar (with plasticiser in it). This way the slabs can be settled down with your rubber hammer, or better still, a length of 4" X 2" that is longer then the width of the slab.
