Hi, Happy new year. I have my boiler in brick garage on outside wall.In the severe frosts I have left it on all night to safeguard boiler. As I have a pilot light, I have decided to turn fan off at night , and rely on heat from pilot to safeguard heat exchanger freezing.combi,it,s not a condenser boiler.just around 0c outside temps. Is this safe and wise? also, can I lag boiler same as a tank? seems as if winters going to be long and heating on 24/7 is costly.

I wouldn't have thought the heat from a pilot would be enough, better to run the boiler constantly on low flame if at all possible, this obviously depends on your make/model. You could probably lag the boiler provided you don't block any air vents, check the manufacturers instructions first and of course it needs to be easily removable for annual servicing and any breakdown maintenance

Hi muggles, cheers, it,s just a temporary thing whilst weather is so cold for long periods.Vokera flowmatic. Nothing to block inside, was just going to chuck thick underfelt over it at night.that,s why I turned fan off, stop it drawing in freezing air at night.from outside.Surprising how warm boiler felt this morning.First time I,ve tried it.They said -5c her last night, 0c.use my common sense and thermometer.HNY

The pilot creates a lot of heat and your risk is over heating the connections to the heat exchanger if the fan is not on!

While there is plenty ( if not too much ) heat from the pilot light for the boiler, that will have no effect on the pipework!

It would be better to leave the boiler working on heating set at minimum on the boiler.

You should never turn the power off so that the fan can continue to run on slow.

Tony

It's VERY common for boilers to overheat and make the heat exchanger connections leak where people turn the power off and leave the pilot on!

The thing you need is a frost stat!! You could eg put a pipe stat on the return pipe to make sure it stays above something like 5 degrees.

Hi,ChrisR, thanks for reply. I have had Homeserve boiler cover for 5 years, up for renwal next month, and during last summer , Diaphram needle wasn,t returning properly, so fan wasn,t idling.on CH Manifold. When I reported it, the Engineer said it,s ok, not supposed to idle, but wasn,t covered.I knew it was wrong, so I just cleaned pin, then it was/is ok.So needless to say, I won,t be renewing. It did get hot, that,s why I reported it. Won,t turn fan off then.Leave on low.Cheers
