I am planning to re-tile my fireplace's surround and hearth.

a) I have started to remove tiles and am finding it difficult to proceed. Any suggestions for how to remove tile?

b) There is grout residue where I have removed tile. How do I smooth it out sufficiently to re-tile?

c) Can I use sanded grout? I prefer its look to unsanded grout.

Thanks for any suggestions.

a) A hammer and bolster and a lot of elbow grease.

b) I think you mean adhesive reidue, grout is the substance used to fill the gaps between the tiles not stick it to the walls, see a) above for how to remove.

c) not quite sure what you mean here...grout that has been sanded down or grout that has a rough sandy texture? if the second, then yes no problem, use a wide joint grout such as BAL wide joint or Ardex C2
