Hey everyone,

I am about to get a walk-in wet style tiled shower done instead of using a shower tray, and I want to make sure I have all the right materials ready before the builder arrives as I do not want to be running around last minute trying to get items.

I am planning to waterproof (tank) the entire floor and the walls only where required.

Could anyone help with advice on:

  • The best materials for wet room floors and walls?
  • Which waterproofing membranes or systems work well for fully tanking floors and walls? Where should I buy it from.
  • Tips on drainage and getting the right slope so water doesn’t pool? Do I need to get some sort of wet room floor former tray or provided builder can build it can I do without it.
  • What kind of sealing and grout to use for durability and water resistance?
I would really appreciate any tips, product recommendations and any advice.

I know I should ask the builder but I also want to have it in my knowledge as what I should know.

Many thanks in advance x

My experience as an amateur, is that cement boards (hardiebacker, for example) work well on the walls, and that the BAL tanking kit works well.

I would expect the builder to want use a shower tray former, and I would expect to quietly grumble to myself about how much they cost.

In theory the area around the shower former can be flat, but I've visited a few with pools of water, so I personally prefer a fall towards the former, even if it's only 1:50

You'll need to think about how to provide enough space for the trap and and a route with enough fall for the drain under the floor to the downpipe.

I'm also quite keen to avoid any PVA for any reason anywhere near a wetroom.

I'd personally want to see (at least photos of) wetrooms the builder has installed before.

...and I wouldn't buy anything till you've agreed an approach that the builder is happy with.
