The shower heating light comes on not as bright as usual but comes on.
Turn the water on and the light goes off and the water stays cold.
I have checked the black wire for burn out to which some have suggested cut and crimped and put back.(on the switch on the wall)
I haven't touched any wires within the shower unit.
The shower has its own mains switch box at the side of the main home switch box.
So theres only two points at which to check behind the switch and in the mains switch box ????

If you do not feel confident to do it you will need to get someone in.
Personally I think you will be wasting money buying a new shower

Its not a "heating" light. Its a light to tell you that electricity is going to the shower unit. That electricity will be used to open a valve as well as heat the water.

Anyway, Derek, buy a new wall switch. Tell the supplier that it is for an 8.5kW shower. Your existing switch might be for an immersion heater and it has now worn itself out (inside the body of the switch where you can't see the damage).
