Your problem appears to be in the wall switch. The contacts or terminals in the switch might be worn through age and use. You give me the impression that you operate the switch every time you have a shower, which will wear out the contacts in the switch. It has to be worth buying a new switch before buying a new shower.

I would have suggested you tested the voltage at all the connections, with shower turned off, and again with it on. I suspect you will find that along part of the circuit the voltage is 230-ish, and further along it drops down when the shower is turned on. Between those two points is the bad connection.
