rear brake cylinder

a mechanic at my garage told me i have a leaking rear brake cylinder is this another word for a wheel cylinder?

No, it's two words but yes, the same thing.

thanks for your quick response, I was also told i will probably need to replace the brake shoes. will i need to just by brake shoes or do they have pads at the back. My car is a laguna 1999 estate

I don't know for sure about your car, but from your mechanics diag. it sounds like they have drum brakes at the rear so you will need shoes. Certainly pads for the front brakes though. This is the most common arrangement on cars.
