Hi All,

Looking for some general advice on the best way to rebuild a 2 step landing.

This is the current state of the area and newel:

The reason for rebuilding is because the floor level has dropped approx 5cm, since I replaced the ventilated wooden floors with concrete. I wanted to rebuild the first step to split the difference of the 5cm. So the first bullnose step would be 2cm higher than the rest of the rises, and the second step, which was a step onto the landing would also be 2cm higher.

Should I just get a new bit of timber as a string for the left hand wall, then route the lower first step into the newel and string? What timber should I use to rebuild. I will likely be capping all threads and risers with some sort of timber covers.

Will I ever be able to get the newel to look decent in its current state, I guess lots of filler and sanding?

When I turned the base of my stairs I just built mdf boxes and stacked them to form steps .

All the risers in a staircase (or flight) must be the same height.

A landing provided between different flights can subdivide the staircase into different flights. Then different riser measurements for different flights are allowed. But all the risers in the sme flight must still be the same.
