Recording live music to mp3

Does anyone know whether it's possible to get a single microphone (or other item) which can be placed in the centre of a studio (or garage for example) and which will record a live practising band straight to MP3?

You can use any item that will record, ie mobile phone.
If it is not saved in mp3 format, you can convert it.

You could also look into zoom recorders http://www.gear4music.com/Recording-and-Computers/Zoom-H4n-Handheld-Digital-Recorder/A1C. Well worth the expense. Also has line in and mic in. Do us a favour though and only use them for your own practice sessions. edit to clarify - no dodgy bootlegs please, us who work in the live enviroment like getting paid for the work) : close edit

A single mic will never give as good a sound as a proper mix though but I guess you realise that.

i'd not thought about that sort of thing.... i was thinking of a slightly more appropriate solution.... one where maybe i could remotely start and stop recording?

Thanks for this, althtough unfortunately the link doesn't work.

Point taken about music theft, but it is for my band... and we could ask the studio to record the whole session, but i want to record just the odd tracks.

That's because using url tags is a long lost art.
