Red gate valve setting?

I have a red gate valve in the bathroom cupboard which controls the hto water feed into the entire flat. When I turn it clockwise it turns off and anti-clockwise opens it and it turns about 7 times from the off position to the on position.
I had to turn it off this morning and I would like to know how many turns should I take for it to be set correctly, thanks.
 
Open it fully then turn back a half turn, to prevent spindle seizing. Gate valves used in your situation should be fully opened.
