How to Turn off Hot Water

Trying to change a washer on a hot tap.

How do I turn the hot water off?

In the airing cupboard their are two valves one is the gate valve which when I turn anti-clockwise.. turns the hot water cold.

Do I also need to turn off the cold water from the mains supply under the kitchen ? To stop the water totally coming from the hot tap.

Also how do I prevent an airlock from happening ?

do you not have isolaters on the hot and cold pipes ,if not turn gate valve off cold feed to the cylinder from cold water storage tank.wont get an air lock.

The gate valve you open and water goes cold is a restriction valve on the return pipe
close it then opet a little to restrict the flow in the coil

To turn your hot off close the valve that comes from your cold storage tank to the bottom of the cylinder
