New Passport rules have now come into force.
People who were born abroad, but have lived in UK for decades, and are applying for a passport, or renewing their passport, are being caught out.
This can affect people who have lived, worked, married, had children, retired, hardly ever lived anywhere else, even ex BOT British Army veterans, in UK.
Even if they've had a passport before, they now need to produce the certificates of marriage and births of their parents, who will probably be dead now, for a renewed passport.
Without this information their ability to travel abroad is severely curtailed, because their application for a renewed passport will be refused, and money not refunded.
Many ex-BOTs army veterans would have had the chance to become naturalised citizens on de-mob, for free, but they never thought they'd ever need it. Now it'll cost 'em time and money, if they can scrape together the information required.

It could affect up to 100,000 British Army Veterans.

Other Commonwealth Nations: Approximately 42,770 veterans were born in Commonwealth nations.
Nepal: Roughly 10,240 veterans were born in Nepal (largely Gurkha veterans).
Ireland: Around 9,480 veterans were born in Ireland.
British Overseas Territories: Roughly 1,370 veterans were born in British Overseas Territories.
Born "Elsewhere": Approximately 44,260 veterans were born in other foreign countries.

Total Estimated Foreign-Born (England & Wales): Summing these categories, approximately 107,850 veterans were born outside the UK, representing roughly 5.8% of the veteran population in England and Wales

I suspect if Scotland and NI were included, the total might be nearer 150,000 potentially affetced.
