Region Locking On High End Samsungs

Mobiles!

Samsung have got narky about grey imports and started locking their phones to regions. IE a European model handset will only work with euro SIM cards.

This is to stop people buying handsets from Asia, bringing them into the UK and selling them cheap.

However, buyers of the SIM-free versions are up in arms that they are paying (in particular with reference to the Note 3) £600+ for a handset that they cannot then travel the world with.

Samsung reckons if you insert a SIM of the correct region into the phone first time of use, this will unlock the region lock, but some buyers disagree.

I wondered if anyone here had any experience. It's not just the Note 3, BTW.

The Mega, Note II, SIII Mini and SIII are included.

But only if they are built after July 2013.

The smart ones among us don't.

The Note 3, for example, is available on-line at far, far less than the high street price.

The Galaxy Mega retails at CPW for £440, but you can buy a UK model from Amazon for £289, a massive £151 saving.

Similarly, S4 retails at CPW for £550, at Amazon, a UK model is £397, another £150+ saving.

(I'm talking SIM-free prices here).

Do they still do phones on which you can just make and receive calls? And which you can use to send text messages?
Anything else is superfluous.
