Reinforce existing retaining wall?

I have a retaining wall that is no longer fit for purpose.

Should I start again or modify?

In the picture below, the gap between the retaining wall on the left and the house on the right was filled with rubble and resulted in damp.

I was thinking of something like below. The new wall would either be poured concrete with shuttering or hollow blocks with concrete and rebar in the holes plus concrete poured between the old and new wall.

For scale, the height between the two DPC’s is 1m.

Instead of all that palaver, just rebuild the wall with foundations if needed.

Finally got some drawings from a structural engineer.

Does anyone have any top tips on building it?

The spec says B503 mesh or H8 L bars between wall and slab with lap length of 450mm. How would you even do it with the mesh?


I’m thinking it’s a case of :

1. Excavate for the 200mm slab.
2. Put the horizontal meshes in with spacers to give 50mm from the top/bottom of the slab.
3. Put the L bars in every 100mm. (Tie in with the horizontal mesh but somehow have the horizontal in the middle of the slab).
4. Pour concrete slab and leave a few days.
5. Build up both skins of blockwork (10n blocks ...heavy!). (Presume no wall ties).
6. Add the vertical B503 mesh.
7. Poor concrete in the gap.

What am I doing wrong?
