I am in the process of opening a concealed fireplace (concealed behind gyp board).

I have uncovered the fireplace (the builder' opening) but am now not sure how to proceed.

The property was built in 1907 of stone.

I can see the lintel needs to be replaced; it is sandstone and is cracked and crumbling away- it is very thin at the centre, though it is not unstable at all, at the moment. The fire opening is stone, sandstone, and so is the lintel; it all looks a bit haphazard (will try to post pic). Can anyone advice on what I should do with this lintel (any other suggestions re the rest of the stone work would be great)
