Hey All,
We recently started opening our inglenook fireplace and other than been exhausting all was going well until we discovered the damage to the left hand Jam. The Lintel and right hand Jam are both sound. However I am now concerned as to how to proceed and if it will be structurally sound when all material in the inglenook has been removed.

The house is stone build with rubble infill. The inglenook is between the living room and the kitchen the wall is aprox 2m thick. The Bread oven on the right is connected by the small sloping brickwork on the bottom right hand side (will be removed). The bread oven opening shares the fireplace lintel and this is staying as is. Prior to starting work there was an old 70s fireplace back which had all been painted white and not been used in decades.

Our aim is to have it as an open inglenook, for decrotive purposes, the top of the chimney was capped when we had the stove fitted last year and the stove is in the same room.

Cheers all,
Dave

Left hand Jam

Right hand Jam

Edit: Just to add the Jams and lintel are cut sandstone and the lintel does not overlap beyond the jams into the wall.
