Hi

Please could you guys let me know how you'd tackle this job/let me know if what I plan to do is downright dangerous!

I'm removing this brick wall (previously a chimney, half was removed already at some point in the past) , structurally I need to retain the pillar on the left all the way to the ground. The width should be two bricks from the left above the lintel.

I was thinking I could knock out all of the crap infill in the fireplace below the lintel and re-brick up to the lintel, tied into the pillar on the left and then allow it to set and take a 9" grinder down the whole brick wall (don't like the vibration chiselling out bricks near the load bearing part as the mortar is terrible) and then through the lintel. Ideally I'd go round the other side and finish the job (don't think a grinder will make it all the way through?) but I don't think I'll have clearance so will have to eat away at it from one side. I must admit, I've never used a 9" grinder - I'm a dab hand with a wee one but not quite sure what to expect (apart from dust!).

I suspect I may find when I take out the fireplace infill, that the bricks will go back towards the room on the other side and that may actually be the line to cut... in which case I'd just be chopping the lintel and bricks above - I think I'd have to support the lintel from underneath while cutting still , anything else to watch out for?

Also what's the best way to remove the toothed-in bricks to the external wall on the right? Is it to try and cut them flush with a bolster chisel?

1. take out the rubbish below the lintel
2. brick up from floor level to the underside of the lintel (it will only be a narrow brick pier - use 2 or 3 brackets to tie it to the remaining wall. Pack stiff mortar between top course and underside of lintel.
3. when hardened, cut down to 2 bricks wide with disc; don't disturb the lintel.
4. on other side of the opening against the external wall, just cut with a bolster.
5. What about a lintel above the opening?

Excellent thanks. Any specific grinder I should hire ? Petrol, 9”?

there’s no lintel above just an upstairs floor joist that is resting on bricks on top of the left hand pillar that I’m leaving . On the far side there is an rsj , also resting on the external wall and spanning to this left hand pillar of brick work
