Hi,

I am currently applying for planning to turn my 1950s bungalow into a two storey house.

If successful I'm wondering if I can take the existing tiled cut roof down myself once the scaffolding has been erected (I'm planning on keeping and reusing the roof tiles). Ready for the brick layers and new roof to be built on top. There is also a redundant chimney in the centre of the house that will need to come down.

Is this a very skilled job best left to the professionals, will it save me much money?

Thanks,

Jon

It would be within the scope of a competent DIY'er but obviously requires a fair amount of thought and planning to make sure you understand the risks and take all necessary precautions and do it in a logical sequence. Certainly I would suggest it is a 2 man job especially when you start dismantling the roof timbers assuming you want to do it in a controlled manner and not just end up with a pile of splintered fire wood and rubble where the bungalow used to stand.

I've done it so it can't be that difficult.
