do i need to have a shut off cap when removing a radiator with a thermostatic valve as unsure if by just turning valve off will stop flow of water to the radiator?
You just need a 1/2" cap and washer to go on the TRV outlet to rad connection. Alternatively a 15mm compression fitting blanking disc and nut will seal it.
This is a white plastic cap which replaces the thermostatic cartridge on the valve body. The big thermostat is removed by turning the threaded ring at its base anti-clockwise.
However Chrishutt's method will work as well, if not better.
