We have installed an Aga in our kitchen. In order to do so we had to remove one electric socket and relocate another plus a telephone socket. Since our usual electrician is busy working away and we needed to have the room ready for the Aga I did the first part myself. Removing the sockets was straightforward - I lifted the first floor, pulled up the cables and removed the excess. I was able to shorten and re-join one at a nearby junction box so that to all appearances that socket never existed. The second was the socket I want to move about 5 ft to a corner of the kitchen. I simply took the cables that had come up from the wall, pulled both through to the corner and re-joined them temporarily with a 30 amp junction box, leaving the longer piece coiled up for the electrician to use when eventually he turns up to reinstall the socket.
My questions: have I already broken the rules by doing this much myself?
If I continue and reinstate the corner socket, am I also breaking the rules?
The socket will be at worktop level in the corner of the room (about a foot out) with the telephone socket alongside. Any rules against this?
The telephone socket had two cables coming down much like a ring main except that they both came from the same direction. I couldn't pull them up so I cut them as near as possible to the top of the wall then all I did was join them together and take off a single cable, which I fed through new holes alongside the ring main cables to the corner awaiting the arrival of the electrician.
I wonder why the telephone socket had two cables supplying it?
Is telephone cable subject to the same new restrictions?
Grateful for your views!
