hi there, we live in a 1950s detached house and have a chimney in the middle of the house in the kitchen. we wish to remove the wall on one side only about 10ft of wall - this is the line of wall that runs across most of the middle and length of the house how do i know if it is supporting?

assume that it is, and deal with the structural elements accordingly, i.e. employ the services of a s.e. or work out the calc's yourself.
have a peek under the upstairs carpets to see which way the joists run.
also, have a look in the loft to see if the wall carries on up to meet any supporting roof timbers.
