Hi all,
First time poster so please bear with me.
My girlfriend and I have just purchased our first home in South East London. A mid terraced 1900s property with some lovely features. The house is in liveable condition but really needs quite a bit of work to bring it up to standard.
One of our first jobs is to tackle the working fireplace. see pic 1. After clawing out what seemed to be a tonne of stone and soil(?) I attempted to take off the rails surrounding the slate (pic 2).
I have managed to sand and carefully chisel away the majority of the sealant but it is though going (pic 3).
I don't want to cause any damage to the slate or surrounding wood but this stuff is so stubborn. It's almost rubber in texture and is a real pain. Are there any solvents I could use to try and devolve it or at least make it easier to get off? I've included a last picture which shows a closeup of what I'm dealing with.
Thank you in advance.
David
