I need to remove an acrylic bath without destroying too much of the existing tiling - any suggestions as to how I get the wall brackets out ?

easy - cut the bath up in situ with a jigsaw. Then you can uscrew the last bit of bath from the bracket. Cut them off with an angle grinder if necessary.
