Advice would be much appreciated. I've just moved into a 1980s house. It has a chimney and somewhere along the line someone has created a 'decorative' extension to the chimney breast in bricks. The original lintel for the chimney breast appears to be in place and a separate lintel appears to support the additional brickwork which extends to the ceiling of the ground floor. I want to reduce the impact of this eyesore. Is this a simple case of whacking out the surrounding bricks until I reach the original chimney breast (the bricks are of different colour? Or is this more complicated than it looks? Any advice much appreciated.
