removing an immersion heater ?

Do you have to drain the hot water cylinder fully down to remove an immersion heater (top entry)? Or will just turning the gate valve to the cylinder cold feed off do the trick??
 
turn the gate valve off turn on a top tap when that stops running drain another couple of gallon from the cylinder drain cock
 
When it becomes apparent that the d.o.c. does'nt work as ifear it won't,
your best avenue of attack is to disconnect the top union ,spring pipe aside carefully and get a hosepipe into cylinder and syphon out to below i/h boss.
 
seems to me that if its top entry like he suggests then a large towel will catch about a litre of water that spills out (having turned the gate valve off

undo (the initial cracking open...) the immersion heater before yoiu drain in to try and not dsamage the cylinder.
