Removing Fireplace

I'm removing a fireplace. The lintel is higher than I want the finished opening. My plan is to add a lintel (http://www.wickes.co.uk/Wickes-Steel-Reinforced-Concrete-Lintels/p/9000038435) lower down to support the bricks below th main lintel.



I now see a couple of hairline cracks in the existing lintel. Is this a concern? Should I get a professional in to have a look? House built 1948.

The hairline cracks are of no concern
Simply remove all the infill bricks below the lines you have marked out - or perhaps you might have to go up to the concrete lintel - & then insert your new lintel and make good.

FWIW: your flue will need sweeping.
What is your final proposal for this new opening - ie whats it for?

Thanks @vinn. It will have a log burner in before winter next year. I'll get a professional in to install that and put a liner in. For now money is tight having just bought the house with lots more pressing work to spend money on. So I'm knocking out myself to make neat hole for now.

I wouldn't make any changes to the lintel position until you know the stove you're going to install. You may need to set the stove slightly onto the room, and that would mean a bend in the flue, which might require the lintel to be higher than you've currently planed.
