Removing floor screed/Adhesive

I'm replacing kitchen floor, have removed old tiles but they were laid on screed the previous time. It's like concrete and hitting it with a lump hammer and bolster is doing the wifes hands no good at all! Any suggestions for softening it up?

Chhers for that, I thought about a Kango, the bit about the wife was an attempt to inject a bit of humour, it's my elbows that are suffering, cheers.
