removing glue

I have moved into a new flat and there are carpets glued to sanded and varnished wooden floor. I want to remove this glue but it is proving difficult.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to remove it. unfortunatly I don't know what type of glue it is!!! White spirt seems to work a little but I'm struggling.

Any help appricated
