I have just made the mistake of using clear knotting compound "suitable for use with woodstains and varnishes" on new skirting board and then varnishing with Ronseal Dark Oak varnish. The knoting has shown through as it is NOT suitable for use with varnish. What do I do? Sanding hasn't helped.

What removes knotting compound?

Knotting is Shellac based, thats why it stinks and makes you high !!! As such i think meths disolves it, having said that once its applied to the knot it might have soaked in andyou may be only sanding the surface. Its not to be used where ever you may stain or varnish when the woodgrain may be seen.
