Removing old sealant from an acrylic bath.

I am trying to remove old sealant from around an acrylic bath of a friend. Most of it is now removed but I have a couple of questions:

1. Is there any benefit in using methylated spirits or white spirit in order to remove the remaining sealant?

2. When I replace the new sealant do I need to fill the bath with water (or is this only required for new baths)?

There is a special silicone removing solution that you can buy. Don't know whats in it though.
