After stripping old white gloss off all staircase. I am left with black like tar coming off with heat gun but would like to go to original wood. Any ideas how to remove tried sanding but just clogs sand paper.

Its called black japan laquer and its a pig to remove..soften as much as you can with paint stripper..then scrub with one of those twisted wire scourer things.

Yeah a 1945ish built ex council strong built but awful to renovate
