I recently purchased a 1930's house which had a loft conversion done around 10 years ago that didn't meet building regulations. I am in the process or removing the majority of what's in there to just revert it back to how it was before and lay 2 layers of 200mm insulation on top of the joists after I have removed the existing plywood floor.
I have removed the plasterboard from the sides so that I can access the whole area of the loft to lay the insulation but was wondering whether I needed to remove the plasterboard on the rafters and whether this would cause any issues with me laying thick insulation beneath.
From what I can see the plasterboard has a white membrane behind it from a small piece of plasterboard I have removed.
Also on an unrelated note I found an orange / yellow quite large substance in a round bubbly shape on top of some brick work and running down part of another. I can't tell whether it's some building material or whether its some sort of fungi / mould like slime mould or something. I believe the walls are cavity insulated so maybe that? (its on the wall which is shared with my neighbour.
