removing red pencil from cardboard

Any suggestions as how to remove red coloured pencil "scribble" from a matt cardboard book cover?

Freeze book (by placing in the freezer for half hour), then scrape the stuff off with a scalpel.

Thanks for that, sounds a bit extreme, taking a scapel to a book but I'll have a go and let you know the outcome.
Its on an old kids 60's annual that I collect and the pencil marks do not seem to be very "loose" that could be lifted; its quite light (although not in colour!). I think the scapel might damage the cover?

The freezing process makes the wax content go crumbly, and therefore, less adhesive. You use the scalpel in a sideways motion (don't cut). The fact that it is so sharp gives you more precision over exactly where you scrape, and how deep.

I really appreciate the reply Tex. One last comment; you refer to wax, the scribble is not the thick wax crayons that kids would use but rather the artist type sketching and colouring pencil that come in the same format as normal lead pencils. Is that what you were referring to?

Yes. They do still have a waxy content to make them adhere to the paper.
