Hi all

Im going to be removing a wall in my kitchen to open it up with a single story backroom (orginally the shed, outside loo) There is a door to one side which will be bricked up for the opening to be in the centre roughly 1.8 metres wide. Either side of the opening will be 600mm brick walls. the wall is essentially the outside wall of the house.

A builder friend thinks that a concrete lintel will be enough for the 1.8m opening but im not so sure, would it not have to be steel?

Would a concrete lintel be enough?

You cannot hope to get a suitable answer on here as we have no idea of the weight load imposed upon your choice of lintel. Either take the advice of your friend or if you have doubts then employ the services of a Structural Engineer which is what you should really be doing to be safe, legal and avoid voiding your buildings insurance should it all go pear shaped.

Yes, a concrete lintel will do the job, but there are many different sizes and strengths and you must make sure you take the correct loads onto the lintel and then select the correct one for the loadings.
