Renault Laguna 1999 revving on its own.

Hi this is a quick question on behalf of my son. He has a renault Laguna hatchback and recently it lost power and the engine started revving erratically. He found that although the engine was revving high the power was just not there and it would fluctuate as time went on. At the time a radiator hose split and emptied out the contents of the radiator. Could this be the root of the problem or could it be something more serious like the electronics etc. Your help in finding the problem and a rough costing is very much appreciated. Thankyou

erratic idling, first thing to check is the MAF sensor (mass air flow)
this can send spurious readings to the ECU and result in the symptoms you have described.
