Evening all.....i have an 03 renault trafic and have had for a few years with no problems at all.
Today whilst travelling from Brighton to Manchester was on the M6 and when accelerating the engine management light came on in red and started flashing. At the same time we lost power steering and the engine cut and we had to pull over.
We tried to start the van and it started straight away and so we crawled to the services about a mile away.
Checked belts and fluids and all okay. Got back in and tried to start and nothing.....just clicks.....connected my battery pack and it then started but still with engine management red light flashing.
Called AA but 3 hour delay due to snow. We decided to try and drive the remaining 30 miles to our job in manchester and then seek help.
The drive was fine but we found that if trying to put too much pressure on the engine ie over 55-60 and 2200 revs the car would start to cut until you backed off the power and then it would run normally at the slower speed.
Arrived at out job and carried out the . After the fit we tried to start the van and even with the power pack the endgine just turned but would not start. After a few attempts it started and ran smoothly. We decided to stay over and so got to hotel and called AA. On way to hotel we still had engine management light red flashing BUT we were able to accelerate and drive as normal at full speed. AA came out and they came out and did some checks but could not hook up to diagnostics as they said their device onoly works on cars over 2005.
Anyway he tightened bolts on battery as apparently there was power going to battery but battery not taking it. Bolts tightened and now battery taking the charge. Engine starts first time now.
The engine runs nice and smooth and even when driving at 55-60 mph earlier it ran smooth and not lumpy at all....
I cant think what it is....anyone else had any similar problems....what was it......any help be gratefully received....thanks. gary

Hi gary

Poor battery connections are becoming quite a common problem now due to the electronic complexity of modern engines, the battery voltage has to remain within certain parameters or problems will occur.

If the connections are poor the votage can vary considerably as the alternator starts to supply the electronics directly and it isn't the nice smooth DC that the battery supplies.

When the engine is not running the same 'high resistance' connection can limit the power, particularly to the starter. Sometimes the connections look and feel OK but are not making proper contact, both the terminal posts and inside of the connectors need to be clean and shiny, a little grease applied will help stop them corroding again.

Pleased you got it sorted anyway, could have cost you a lot of money otherwise.

Peter
