RENAULT TRAFIC WONT TURN OVER

hi all...i have 2003 renault trafic and has been a fantasitc workhorse for me but this morning out of the blue it would not crank over.
put key in and turn and all lights come on but then try to start and just a few clicks from solenoids but nothing else.
called AA and he came out and after half hour moaning bout not being able to gain access to starter motor declared that the starter motor solenoid was not working.
There was power in battery and then he used meter to check that power was getting to the starter motor but then nothing.
We have never had problem with starting the van so was wonering if anyone has had similar problems.
Could it be anything else???
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I wouldn't rule out the battery or connections to it, connect a voltmeter across it and watch the voltage when engaging the starter, if it goes practically to nothing either the battery is faulty or its connections are poor. If the battery is OK the starter could be faulty or it could be the ignition switch.
