We have an original Victorian fireplace. It has a broken stove we've taken out, and we want to have an open fire (we know a new stove is more efficient).

The chimney has been declared sound but the bricks were coated with some fireproof foam blocks. This has been removed leaving bare bricks, which we need to make heatproof... We have the original surround in place.

I've seen you can get render but no idea which to get, how easy it is to work with, or how much is needed; it's an 18" grate.

Think you may need fire inserts. Do a search for open cold fire places . I came across them few month back.
